i even had a look at "unreal script" and it looks like a doddle (and very cool too). however, i don't think i could realistically expect to go in at senior level and especially not with the salary and benefits i'm getting at arum so after some deliberation i decided that it would be selfish of me to persue this at this time given our financial situation (i am the only bread winner in the household).
once cheryl has finished education and has a teaching job we may be able to afford for me to take a cut in salary, in the mean time i'm going to set myself some personal objectives:
- get my math sorted. after i get back from our honeymoon i'm going to sign up for a-level maths... fundamental stuff which will just make my life easier.
- learn gaming design patterns (i have a great book which describes the majority of them and how they hang together, high level stuff, not code)
- learn unreal engine scripting and produce some sample games (the experience should be transferable to other engines in the future)
so cheryl has another year of her degree, taking a year out to work and make sure she has the pre-reqs for teaching, a year of teacher training, then hopefully she'll get a job pretty quickly. three years ... in that time i can pump my pension and savings and do all the above objectives before i start applying for jobs at places like realtime worlds.

any time now warhammer online is going to be released. i was never a big fan of warhammer (preferring wh40k) but this game is set to be very good, especially given the depth of pvp promised. we shall see - at any rate i have pre-ordered the collector's box set which looked worth it just for the goodies, if not the game.

can't wait for the forums to go up as i have some ideas which i think mmos would benefit from, especially warhammer 40k, for instance:
- squad leader assigned objectives. that is, when completing a squad based mission (especially pvp) it makes sense for the squad leader to assign objectives in order to complete the mission's primary objectives. as a result, players should be rewarded for completing the objectives set by their commander, and especially if the mission is successful. as a side effect, squad leaders should gain a bonus for successfully leading a mission. sounds pretty simple, but no mmo does this right now.
i have a few other ideas too, which i'll wait to post on the wh40k online forum when it goes up.
